Introducing FishESL, the electronic shelf labels for fish tanks

Fish tank labels for research and aquariums

We know from experience that the organisation of any research institute is often one of the biggest challenges. From research to maintenance, including zootechnicians and husbandry managers, teams may struggle to communicate efficiently. We wanted to help.

Luxaqua introduces FishESL, a groundbreaking Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) system designed to enhance daily operations and communication in aquatic research institutes, coral & fish nurseries, public aquariums, and aquaculture research centres.

Connected to LXA_Fishlab, our information management software, each FishESL displays real-time data and notifications directly at the front of the tank, thanks to its wireless RFID protocol. Detailed information about the required task can be accessed by scanning the QR codes displayed with the LXA_FishLab app on your mobile device. Taking care of the numerous individuals in aquatic research facilities, whatever the size whatever the species, has never been easier.

Enhancing daily operations at aquatic labs with FishESL

FishESL is more than just an informational display; it is a tool designed to enhance the efficiency of daily operations in aquatic facilities, helping scientists to focus on their research goals by reducing human errors and thoroughly following up on necessary maintenance. The system allows for:

Real-time updates

Information is sent via the wireless RFID protocol from a central emitter linked to our management information software LXA_FishLab. This system ensures that all data displayed is current improving the response time to any tank-specific needs. FishESLs replace handwritten notes and post-it, minimising the likelihood of miscommunication and errors and, in the end, saving everyone’s time on the team.

Advanced notification system

The sophisticated alert system based on icons & colour codes signals routine tasks such as feeding or cleaning and critical alerts, such as helping to prioritise actions based on severity and immediate needs. Fish ESL integration with LXA_Fishlab allows instant and simultaneous notifications across different teams, fostering better coordination among technicians, researchers, and maintenance staff. Detailed notes can be read on-site by scanning the displayed QR code with the LXA_FishLab app.

Quick on-site tank identification

In case some actions need to be coordinated across tanks sharing similar characteristics, it is possible to switch on a blinking white LED located on the right side of the screen to identify on-site the tanks quickly selected thanks to the sorting filters available on LXA_FishLab.

Easy installation

Thanks to the simplicity of the wireless communication, there is no need for complicated and costly wiring across the facility. This system is scalable from small laboratories to large facilities (from a few to thousands of fish tanks).

Detailed features of FishESL

FishESL combines advanced technology with practical functionality to improve the management of aquatic species inventory and operations across the facility. Each specification was designed with researchers, zootechnicans and maintenance teams in mind.

Up-to-date information

Each label shows tank reference numbers, project details, population statistics (total/female/male), and lineage in real-time according to the data input on LXA_FishLab.

Wireless connectivity

Equipped with NFC and RFID technology, the FishESL system only needs the installation of an emitter connected to the facility’s LAN. Each emitter covers a surface area of 100 to 130 m².

E-ink technology

The display doesn’t use any backlight and cannot disturb fish and other aquatic species’ photoperiods (growth and reproduction).

User-friendly icons

The lower part of the display features 8 easy-to-understand icons that draw attention to tasks and issues such as feeding, water quality, health, maintenance, cleaning, crossing, notes, and alarms.

Colour display

Colour-coded dots (red for urgent, yellow for caution) are used on the icons to indicate the priority of tasks for each tank. Critical events will make the background blink in yellow or red to draw attention to tanks requiring immediate care.

QR Code Integration

Displays a QR code that can be scanned with the LXA_FishLab app on a mobile device to access detailed information and operational tasks.

White LED on the side of the display

Control from LXA_Fishlab which tanks must be visible on-site to help with research or maintenance grouped operations.

Functionalities available with the LXA_FishLab app

Using the LXA_FishLab app is not a requirement, but it enhances the team’s coordination of tasks since each collaborator can go through their to-do list paperless (which further reduces the risk of human error). With the LXA_FishLab app, you can:

  • Check daily to-do lists sorted by priority
  • Scan QR codes to read notes and comments on-site
  • Add or edit comments and notes that will also be visible on the desktop version
  • Take pictures to add visual information about the tank
  • Consult water quality trend curves
  • Activate the white LED of a selection of fish tanks with common characteristics

How aquatic research facilities use our FishESLs

Aquatic research facilities of any size can benefit from the features of FishESL for experimentation and production (husbandry, breeding or aquaculture). Here are some practical cases in which our fish tank electronic shelf labels can help:

  • Research: Identify where all individuals of a specific lineage are located to lead studies on them. You can select on LXA_FishLab in one click all the individuals of a particular lineage and make the white LED on the side of the FishESL blink wherever the tank contains these individuals.

  • Feeding: Zootechnicians can quickly identify with the icon “feeding” if the individuals in the tank need food (yellow dot alert) or if something is wrong with their feeding quantity or composition (red dot alert). To know the alert’s exact nature, the zootechnician scans the QR code to read the detailed information with the LXA_FishLab app. LXA_FishLab can also be connected to a smart feeding system (contact us for more details)

  • Breeding: The display will blink yellow or red whenever the eggs are about to hatch, depending on the delay. This visual alert will help zootechnicians act swiftly to separate the eggs from the breeders. The same system can alert them about young individuals ready for reproduction or older breeders. The latter indicates a need for back-up breeders to avoid disrupting the production of eggs and larvae.

  • Health & Quarantine: Zootechnicians can quickly identify with the icon “health” if the individuals in the tank need medication (yellow dot alert) or if their condition requires to place them in a quarantine area (red dot alert). To know the alert’s exact nature, the zootechnician scans the QR code to read the detailed information with the LXA_FishLab app.

  • Isolated tanks & individuals: The alert system can also warn zootechnicians of fish tanks which haven’t been used for weeks (no input or output) or isolated individuals. Working automatically, it will draw their attention by making the display blink in colour as they pass by these tanks while on their daily routine.

Benefits of asking Luxaqua to set up a FishESL system at your aquatic research facility:

  • In-house developed software able to meet 100% of research protocol requirements
  • User-friendly interface to enhance workflows and save time
